Is hockey over-coached?
This is something that has been going through my mind since last summer, while I was teaching at our hockey camps. It surfaced when I watched how much attention the goaltenders get from the goalie coach. Every move is calculated, positioning is paramount. What about the goalie's athleticism? On most competitive hockey teams there is a head coach, defensive coach, offensive coach and a goalie coach. Hockey players are so programmed for every possible situation now. Where is creativity encouraged?
Competitive hockey is all about wins and losses. If the team wins, the coach keeps his job, if the team loses, he gets released. No wonder coaches try to use the trap. This happens in most minor hockey associations as well. One reason why Gretzky was so great was that, as a kid, he spent hours & hours on his backyard rink having fun and practicing his creative "moves".
I'd be interested in what you think.

hockey, like so many other aspects of life (in my opinion) demands creativity. its what makes an athlete or artist great. cooking just wouldnt be the same if the chef didnt just change something on a whim. haveing not played under a coach for years its hard to say weather or not the game is too coached. however, i am a big advocate for Creativity. bless you Glen.
